I got married last October, and I'm sure like many new couples starting out, our house, from kitchen utensils and appliances to furniture and decor, is a collection of his, hers, and some wedding gifts. It's not particularly cohesive and honestly, some of it has seen its better days. One such item we have been talking about wanting to replace is an old blue couch. This couch has been through a lot including the destructive phase of several puppies. However, with a big, expensive move this past January, and our current search to buy our own home in our new state, a brand new couch just didn't fit into our budget.
So the other day, we stumbled onto a brilliantly simple idea at Bed, Bath and Beyond. It was so incredibly simple that I couldn't believe it hadn't occurred to us before. Why buy a whole new couch if we could revamp the one we already had. So we purchased a couch cover, which after our 20% off coupon cost us $103. (Tip: If you don't already know, Bed, Bath and Beyond coupons never expire. Despite what the expiration date says, they will still accept them. So don't ever throw them away.)
This is what it looks like after putting the cover on. The cushions look a little lumpy but already a lot better.
The next step was the four throw pillows that no longer matched. I'm a big fan of neutrals with bright accents. So we went with the dark brown cover but I wanted colorful pillows. I checked out Pinterest for tutorials on covering pillows and found this one that I thought looked cute. Particularly the ones with the buttons.
After a trip to JoAnn's Fabric, and $22 for 6 yards of fabric and some buttons, I was ready to go.
So here is the complete couch makeover that cost a total of $125 and has given some new life to our old couch wreck. The great thing is that the most expensive part of the project was the neutral couch cover, so if we decide to change up our decorating at any point we could inexpensively recover the pillows and wouldn't have to change the cover. It'd still be a whole new look. Once we get our new house, I may have to look into finding some curtains to go with it. :)
